BookHighway was founded by author Tom Surman, also known as Tom Cossie, and technology leader Dean Shoultz. It grew from an author’s experience and a long-standing partnership.
A familiar question.
After self-publishing his first book, Tom took part in book clubs, writers’ associations, marketing panels, and promotional discussions. He heard a common need: authors wanted practical, direct access to the people who could help them introduce their books to readers.
For Tom, that sounded familiar. His experience in music and publishing had shown him how much songwriters and authors share. Both invest deeply in their craft. Both reach a moment when the work is finished and a different kind of work begins: helping it find an audience.
A road we had traveled before.
Years earlier, while serving as president of the independent label Saturn Records, Tom had hired Dean and his team to build StarTracker, a platform for organizing the contacts and information behind music promotion.
Bookstores, press, podcasts, radio, events, festivals, and tours have their own rhythms. But the underlying challenge was recognizable: scattered information needs to become an organized, useful plan. Tom and Dean brought that thinking to BookHighway.
Technology in service of the author.
BookHighway brings contact discovery, campaign planning, promotional materials, and follow-through into one place. Alice adds an AI partner to that work: helping authors use their book’s context to make informed decisions and prepare personal outreach.
The principle remains the same. Authors should have the tools to shape and share their own message, connect more directly with bookstores and media, and keep control of their promotional efforts.
